Bye Bye Dry Skin

Bye Bye Dry Skin

Winter is fast approaching and one of the seasonal side effects can be dry skin.  More time inside exposed to dry air heat and synthetics can also be a contributing factor.  As can be the cold and blustery wind conditions outside.

Dry skin can also be caused by a combination of environmental stressors and poor nutrition. You may need to experiment a little to determine what is causing your dry skin condition.

Here are some tips to help keep your skin moist, soft and dewey fresh throughout the Winter Season and all Year Through:

– Hydrate! When cells are dehydrated, they lose their plumpness and structure. Make sure you are drinking at least half of your body weight in water a day (ex: 140 lbs= 70 oz  water) and reduce your caffeinated beverage consumption which is a natural diuretic.

– Eat foods rich in essential fatty acids (good fats) such as avocados, fish, nuts and seeds. For more severe conditions, consider supplementing with fish, flaxseed or evening primrose oil.

– Look into poor calcium metabolism – calcium is a drying mineral, and if it’s not processed properly, it can get dumped into the “wrong places”, including the skin. You can find out if you have poor calcium metabolism by having a hair analysis done.

– Check your thyroid health.  Low thyroid hormone levels can cause many symptoms, including dry skin.

– Stop using all those chemical laden personal hygiene products.  Petroleum based products actually make you drier, causing you to keep applying them ,thus creating a vicious cycle for your skin and overall health.  If you wouldn’t eat it, chances are it has no business on your skin.  Try organic coconut oil, olive oil or almond oil instead.

– Eat nutrient dense fruits and vegetables local and organic whenever possible, letting your skin shine from the inside out.  Real food, not processed food nourishes our bones and body, nourishing the skin.

– Keep your digestive system in order.  We hear a lot about probiotics, but prebiotics are just as important.  Check that the source you are using contains both.  When things are off with digestion it shows up through the skin.

– Exercise and sweating stimulate the skin and lymph system rebuilding the skin on a cellular level and riding the body of toxins so a healthy you can shine through. Try a sauna, steam, or better yet a hot Yoga class.

These are just a few tips to help you on your path to healthier skin.  Let us know how you fair.

Namaste,
